Angeli set up the opening goal for Smith as she nodded a free kick into the path of the England international, allowing Smith to finish past Washington goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris for her seventh goal of the season.

The second goal arrived in the 56th minute for Boston as a scrum in front of the net led to Cheney sliding a ball to Angeli for an easy finish and a 2-0 Breakers lead.

Wambach got Washington back to within a goal as she headed the ball home 23 minutes from time, but Cheney made sure her team continued its winning ways as she pounced on a rebound from Amy LePeilbet's shot and beat Harris.

The Atlanta Beat was able to hold first-place FC Gold Pride to a 0-0 draw, while the Chicago Red Stars got a goal and an assist from Karen Carney in a 2-1 win over Sky Blue FC.
